Educators, along with civic activists and parents, have called for equity in education. Their ongoing pleas have brought awareness to potential flaws in standardized testing and additional common features of education. Other discrepancies based on demographic regions were also brought to light. These efforts have stressed the importance of equitable education for every student.
Fairness and Inclusion
Fairness and inclusion are vital components for equitable education. Advocacy groups are working toward this dynamic goal in which every student will have the ability to achieve their personal academic best regardless of social or economic circumstances. Inclusivity is an important partner to fairness. The ideal for inclusion is to ensure that the common benchmark standards of education are equal for every student, irrespective of their demographics such as location, background, family dynamic, and other characteristics.
The expectation of an equitable education is that every student is given the opportunity to perform to the best of their ability. On an individual level, students are expected to willingly perform up to or exceed the new standards. Tools will be provided to help students succeed under new, equitable, guidelines. Resources may include additional time or private rooms for testing. Online resources and physical classrooms will offer tutorial videos, tools, and other learning tips. Additional program development options will provide support to students struggling with a common language. Alternative learning programs are also in the works for students who have been diagnosed with one or more learning disabilities.
The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) is one of the major proponents of equity in education. Leaders of this organization, along with similar groups, produced key indicators and initiatives to provide equitability among learning institutions. Some of the highlights include:
- Eliminating the need for school selection
- Developing a well-rounded curriculum
- Increasing individualized programming
- Reducing high school dropout rate
- Providing access to appropriate secondary education
Ongoing initiatives are designed to assist students from the beginning of their learning experience through post secondary education. Standardized testing and other norms will be replaced with individual resources for effective learning. Targets and benchmarks are scheduled as checkpoints throughout the process to ensure equitable practices are being intentionally and properly used.
